20th Anniversary

Hi-Tech Metrology was established on the 1st of April 1992 by current managing director Ian Martin to promote and support the Sheffield Measurement range of Coordinate Measuring Machines and since our incorporation 20 years ago we have grown to become Australia's largest specialist supplier of metrology equipment and related services.

There have been many milestones over the past 20 years beginning with the companies' first Sheffield CMM sale to Dunlop Aerospace (now Rosebank Engineering) in late 1992 followed in quick succession by sales to Hawker de Havilland, Ford, Robert Bosch and others.  From these humble beginnings in a small Bayswater factory the company has grown to now having offices and showrooms around Australia with an established distributor providing coverage on the North and South islands of New Zealand.

As the business grew through the 1990's our reputation for excellence in service was becoming well established, both domestically with customers and overseas with many of the worlds leading manufacturers, all of which led to approaches being made for Hi-Tech Metrology to take on distribution of other complimentary metrology products.  So it was then that over a number of years contracts were signed with select key hardware manufacturers such as Micro-Vu, Romer, Brown & Sharpe, Hexagon Metrology, Hommelwerke, etc. and software developers Innovmetric and Wilcox Associates to promote and support their products throughout the region.  This extensive range of products, services and experience now allows Hi-Tech Metrology to tailor complete solutions for almost any measurement or reverse engineering task.

In late 1995 we were approached by PBR (now Chassis Brakes International) to provide Coordinate Measuring Machines capable of functioning in a shop floor environment and being operated by machine tool operators.  Hi-Tech Metrology, in conjunction with Sheffield Measurement, then developed a highly successful system incorporating a pressurised enclosure encapsulating the CMM to keep contaminants away from the machine and a software system called STI (Single Touch Interface) that allowed unskilled personell to walk up and measure their own parts.  The system was so successful that PBR rolled it out across their manufacturing facilities both in Australia and the USA with Sheffield eventually developing the shop hardened Discovery series CMM thereby eliminating the need for pressurised enclosures.

The concept of shop floor CMM's was then also picked up by GMH, amongst others, and multiple machines were incorporated into Holden's new V6 engine plant in Port Melbourne.  Hi-Tech Metrology initially delivered, configured, programmed and installed these CMM's at various machine tool manufacturing plants in Japan to support the machining line run-offs then, once the machining lines were verified, these CMM's were shipped to Australia and integrated into the cylinder head, cylinder block and crankshaft production lines here in Melbourne along with specialised crankshaft measuring systems manufactured by Hommelwerke GmbH.

There have been many other success stories over the past 20 years, some of which are featured our website, and as technology continues to evolve there will be many more examples of the innovative way in which metrology and scanning equipment can be used to improve productivity and ultimately enhance a company's bottom line.  Technologies we supply include Tactile CMM, Video CMM, Portable Arm, Laser Scanning, Photogrammetry, Surface and Form, Laser Tracker, Optical Tracker, White Light Scanning,  Motion Tracking and more, all of which can be customised and optimised to suit specific applications.

With our staff of highly skilled individuals offering a combined total of well over 250 years experience in the metrology industry we are able to help customers achieve the best possible outcomes with their measurement needs through the supply of world class equipment, training, customisation, advice and support. With such a wide variety of measurement and reverse engineering equipment being available to suit such a diverse range of industries and applications from precision measurement of bionic ear implants to scanning of massive mining components, Hi-Tech Metrology continues to develop innovative and cost effective solutions to many of the metrology challanges faced by companies today.

Today with our headquarters in a purpose built facility housing offices, showroom, laboratory and training classroom in the Melbourne suburb of Hallam, Hi-Tech Metrology is extremely proud to be celebrating their 20th anniversary and would like to also take this opportunity to thank all their customers and suppliers for the support they have shown over the past two decades.
