RMIT Advanced Manufacturing Precinct
RMIT selects Brown & Sharpe Global CMM as its Flagship Metrology Resource for New Advanced Manufacturing Precinct (AMP).
In response to five years' of industry consultations RMIT is establishing an Advanced Manufacturing Precinct in Carlton, Victoria to deliver practical industry skills training for the design, development, production, marketing and management processes of the advanced manufacturing sectors. The George Thompson Building, which will house the Advanced Manufacturing Precinct, has been extensively renovated and will also be extended to include an additional level.
The Advanced Manufacturing Precinct will:
- Provide "real-life" industry training in high-level skills and para professional areas identified by the advanced manufacturing industry as skills shortage areas
- Deliver cross-disciplinary training to meet industry needs in engineering and advanced manufacturing technologies, applied design, development, production, marketing and management.
- Provide training that will be aligned with design research to be undertaken at the University's future Design Hub, and mechanical manufacturing and aerospace engineering on the Bundoora campus.
- Develop opportunities for new and innovative product development in manufacturing through co-location of applied design and advanced manufacturing specializations
- Foster co-operation and joint ventures between industry and training providers and make facilities available to other Registered Training Organizations (RTOs)
- Be a "test bed" for new products and processes.
- Provide rapid prototyping, manufacturing and computer integrated manufacturing, which includes automation, systems integration, computer numerically controlled manufacturing and testing of products and materials
In selecting equipment for the new AMP, Marcos Anastassiou, senior manager, Office of Director TAFE, RMIT, commented that "We were looking for world's best practice equipment to be part of this new technology centre in order to give our students, as well as our industry partners and other collaborators the best possible advantage when delivering training courses to students and for clients in order to facilitate the delivery of their new project to the market."
Marcos also went on to say that, "We selected the purchase of a Brown & Sharpe Global Performance CMM from Hi-Tech Metrology, because of Hi-Tech's strong reputation in the market for offering the latest range of technologies in the metrology field as well as their strength with after-sales support and service. We know that with the purchase of the Brown & Sharpe CMM system from Hi-Tech, we are obtaining not only the latest, leading-edge CMM technology that is currently available, but we will be fully supported with great metrology and inspection software that is compatible with the majority of industrial users in Australia."
According to Chris Knuckey, capital sales at Hi-Tech Metrology, the CMM purchased by RMIT for the new AMP facility is an excellent addition to this new and exciting venture for the University. Chris also remarked that the CMM purchase by RMIT will be the cornerstone of a world's best practice inspection and measurement facility within the Precinct and capable of being augmented with other complimentary technologies such as laser scanning, pont cloud engineering, vision and camera systems. These other technologies available from Hi-Tech Metrology are consistent with our objective of providing the latest metrology solutions from around the world to all of our clients throughout Australasia.
The Brown & Sharpe CMM in the new Advanced Manfacturing Precinct is an ideal compliment to the other equipment purchased by RMIT and will enable industry to accurately measure and inspect products produced on the state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment within the facility. We all look forward to celebrating the many successes of the Precinct for the future benefit of the engineering and manufacturing industry.
The $15 million new RMIT Advanced Manufacturing Precinct will be completed on-schedule at the end of this month and will open its doors for business to industry and students after April 2011.
